Dear Kamal Aiya,

My question is about Pancha Niwarana Dhamma. Does everything we experience in life a result of Kamma or is it an effect of Pancha niwarana. PLease clarify this for me.

Dear Ranga,

Lord Buddha had described Pancha Neewarana Dhamma (Kamachanda, Vyapada, Thinamidda, Uddachchakukkuchcha, Vichikichcha) as five causes that prevent, retard or block enlightenment (i.e. the realization of the truth).

They are different from Pancha Niyama Dhamma (Utu Niyama, Bija Niyama, Kamma Niyama, Chitta Niyama, Dhamma Niyama) that Lord Buddha had described as the principles that govern everything. So you see that Kamma Niyama is just one of Pancha Niyama Dhamma (not Pancha Neewarana Dhamma).

Hence, everything we experience in life (or more precisely everything that happens everywhere) is governed by Pancha Niyama Dhamma where Kamma is just one of the five (Kamma affects humans and other living beings). So this is the general answer to your question.

But your question (“Does everything we experience in life a result of Kamma...?”) can be interpreted in a different way where it's possible to link Kamma to everything we experience. That is by investigating what causes an individual's birth (which needs to happen for someone to experience what is governed by Pancha Niyama Dhamma). If that cause doesn't exist, there will not be an individual to experience anything. So from that perspective, Kamma can be seen as a cause resulting everything we experience. However, it's much better to use a word like “Avidyawa” to describe this cause for rebirth than the word “Kamma” to avoid some confusions. In this regard, the best is to investigate what Lord Buddha had described as Patichcha Samuppadaya. Patichcha Samuppadaya is a supremely important disclosure of Lord Buddha that everyone (i.e. those interested in Lord Buddha's path to Nirwana) should remember and constantly reflect on to improve deeper understanding.
